Specialty Training and Proofreading

We can educate almost all of our students, but we can’t teach curiosity.  The curious, ambitious student will continue the learning process as long as she or he has room to grow or earn a higher rate of pay.   Our Specialty Training classes are designed with these students in mind.  Students can take these medical transcription courses one at a time.

  • Transcriptionists with Specialty Training generally earn much more money
  • Proofreaders can earn more money while doing very little typing

Specialty Training 1 teaches  advanced medical transcription skills.  This class prepares the student to work at a higher level and with increased pay opportunities.  As always with Med Workshops, the student has access to Q and A from experienced MTs in our Student Forum or by email.

Proofreading Internship is a truly unique class.  Many transcriptionists want to “move up”.  Proofreading (also known as editing or quality control) requires much less typing!  Some transcriptionists have trouble with carpal tunnel.  Other MTs wish to use their experience to move up the pay scale.  And still others enjoy the chance to move into an area that allows them to “train”.  We don’t know of any other Medical Transcription School offering an Internship for Proofreading.  Are you best suited being a Proof Reader?  You can only learn it here at Med Workshops.

Learning is more than absorbing facts, it’s acquiring understanding.  Students understand when they can ask questions and get answers from a teacher.

Specialty Training 1

Specialty Training 1 is a thoroughly comprehensive 19 hours of physician dictation in five main medical specialties: cardiology (4 hours), gastrointestinal (4 hours), orthopedics (4 hours), pathology (4 hours), and radiology (3 hours).  You must know these Specialties to work at the top level of the transcriptionist profession.

These reports challenge the student.  Specialty 1 is "the finishing touch", preparing students for work in any medical transcription setting.  This program is more self directed than Bright Start™.  Q and A sessions are held in our counselor-run Student Forum or by email.

• Radiology
• Operative reports
• Diagnostic procedures
• Complex discharge summaries
• Pathology

Prerequisite:  Completion of Bright Start or equivalent

Length of class:  This class will take approximately four (4) months total (400 hrs.).  This is a very thorough study.  A three (3) month extension is available.

Proofreading Internship

A seasoned medical transcriptionist is responsible for creating a document which is accurate and returned to the system in a final polished form.  This means editing and proofreading skills are a must!  Once again Internship is the best teacher.

Every first-rate healthcare facility and medical transcription company has a quality control department which checks all their transcription.  The purpose of this course is to prepare the student for work in this setting.  In this Internship you will learn how to proofread and edit work typed by other medical transcriptionists.

A great attitude is both free and priceless at the same time.  You’ll learn how to acquire this skill if you don’t already possess it.  Proofreading is more than imparting knowledge to those you edit, it’s also a matter of inspiring some changes.

Prerequisite:  Completion of Specialty Training 1 or equivalent.

Length of Proofreading Internship:  This internship is not self-paced.  Your schedule is established by you and your mentor.  The entire Proofreading Internship is to be completed in no less than four (4) months.  A three (3) month extension is available for students who have scheduling issues.

Once a person loses the spirit of learning and rests on their achievements, their progress stops.

"Unfortunately, some students learn about Bright Start™  only after spending hundreds, or thousands of dollars on inferior training."

"I have just completed an Advanced Medical Transcription program with ........ College in Canada. I now understnad the importance of a mentor, which my program does not offer. Although it has only been two weeks, I am already experiencing the frustration of trying to find an entry-level position.   Is your mentoring program open to MTs that have not taken your program?"

Testimonial

Becoming a medical transcriptionist was a career change for me.  After working in the computer industry for 10+ years, I knew I was not happy with my career and wanted to make a change.  Before choosing MED Workshops, I researched web training and local colleges and found that MED Workshops had the most to offer.  It was the best decision I have ever made!  For the first time in my life I have a career that I absolutely love, a company and people I really enjoy working with, and I feel as though what I am doing is important.   Heather
