Secrets of a Work At Home Mom
|
"It’s the only job I’ve ever loved" she says. "Being an MT is such a good fit for me in so many ways." Karen was the mother of three boys when she decided that the family needed some additional income, but she wanted to work from home. "I'd had other jobs, but I didn't like dressing up, the office "politics", and hugs which were 'too friendly'." So she enrolled in an online-home Medical Transcription Course. After she graduated she interned as a medical transcriptionist with her Mom. "I couldn't find any other place which would offer an internship."
"Medical transcription came easy to me because I loved medicine. I wanted to be a nurse, but with three young boys I knew I couldn’t work outside the home yet. I knew enough computer basics to start.” She began working for her Mother in 1996, working from her home outside Seattle. She quickly earned enough money for the family to buy a wonderful cottage on a picturesque lake.
Karen’s Typical Day: She works from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the corner of a bedroom in her home. Her office is a small "sanctuary". It is quiet and has a big window opening out onto one of the gardens. She uses a desk that her husband specifically built for her needs.
“Everything is homey and quiet during my work time. At lunch I’ll wander through the garden or go down by the lake and sit in my beach chair if it is sunny. At 3 p.m. I shift gears and start dinner. I welcome the kids home at 3:30 and flip on the TV to catch the news.”
“I’m a morning person and this allows me the time to always be with my family when they come home. Of course I love the extra money too. If I need or want to, I can go shopping before I start work and also run a few errands. During the summer, I can change my schedule and work late at night. I love the flexibility. I love working with professionals. Medical transcription isn’t a job, it’s my professional career. No one can ever take it away.”
"I thoroughly endorse the Med Workshops Programs. This is the type of system which works."
The idea to get me started was, "move forward and inspiration will find you". |

Karen found a career with personal freedom. For Karen, an MT since 1996, transcribing medical records from her home on a lake outside of Seattle is as close to a perfect a job as possible.
