At first, I was kind of hesitant, because it was an online class and I thought it would not be the same as a college course where you actually attend classes. It actually turned out for the best. I could do my course at my own pace, keeping in mind that I had up to one year to complete it. I really loved the flexibility of this schooling. I have 3 kids at home, the youngest just 14 months, and I could study any time that I had a chance. I loved that if I was wide awake at 4 in the morning after feeding my then 4 month old, I could just hop on the computer and study away. The layout was great and easy to work through. Becoming a medical transcriptionist was a career change for me. After working in the computer industry for 10+ years, I knew I was not happy with my career and wanted to make a change. I have had an interest in medical transcription for many years, even though I have been a nurse since 1972. The appeal to be able to use the medical knowledge I already have, and to have that augment a new career in medical transcription is why I decided to pursue MED Workshops a couple of years ago. I had explored different ways of trying to get started in the field, but they all seemed to lead me back to the fact that some training was necessary for anyone to launch a successful career in medical transcription. After years of high stress nursing jobs, I am quite excited to start my new low-stress-work-at-home-career very soon. I just completed the MED Workshops course this past week and have been most impressed with the quality of training including all the necessary equipment and books that were provided. I only made one phone call to MED Workshops and I started the training almost immediately in the privacy of my own home and at my leisure. Having been an instructor myself at our community college for eleven years, I can enthusiastically say that the coordination and presentation of the lesson plans have made learning the material a very positive experience for me, parallel to how I would choose to teach my own students. I have said repeatedly to my husband how amazed I am at the organization and presentation of the lessons and that only REAL teacher staff would have had a clue as to how to ease us students through such involved information toward the amazingly positive results I have experienced as one of those students. The medical transcription course is a very good one. It is comprehensive and gives over 600 real transcriptions to practice on. Given my educational background (a PhD in Microbiology), the first part of the course was not difficult at all for me. If ones does not have a science backbround, this course will quickly get you up to speed. The second part of the course is where the rubber meets the road. Just remember, this is where one develops an ear for transcription and nothing accomplishes that better than practice, practice, practice and Internship! I found MED Workshops through a classified ad in my local paper. Every time I called MED Workshops, I got the answers to my questions and a good laugh along the way! I was very happy with the MED Workshops. I had checked out other self-paced medical transcription training programs and found that MED Workshops's was much more thorough. Why don't the others offer an Internship? It started out with the basics and built on that, then offered tons of opportunity to practice and get experienced hearing and transcribing real doctors. Then, it was so valuable to get the corrections to the work instantly via the internet. Overall, I was very happy with the training program and felt it did a good job of giving me the basic tools to start doing transcription at home. I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone else who is interested in training for medical transcription. Being able to work at home has been so awesome! I love the flexibility of being able to set my own schedule each day according to the needs of my family. I was interested in medical transcription and saw an ad in the paper for MED Workshops. I was impressed with the whole package that was offered, the online course (which was very important to me as I was unable to sign up for any course where I would have to go outside my home), the books, partners in education, job placement, online support, and student forum. The price for me was a bit much, but after an extensive research I found out that it really was reasonably priced with all that it included. So, after a few months of saving I invested in my education and took the course. The course was very informative and interesting. There is an online forum that was very supportive for me. With so much new information, some days were overwhelming, and sharing with other students helped me get through those days. Everyone has their own technique of learning. I do have to say that for anyone taking this course, you must follow it to the tee! No shortcuts. If there is a recommendation from the staff of how to learn the material - do it! I was lucky to have found MED Workshops when I did because I might have spent more money than I actually needed to and might not have had the support I needed. I picked MED Workshops because I was looking for a job where I could work from home so I could be with my newborn daughter and it was something I had been wanting to get into. I knew a friend who was doing medical transcription and she really enjoyed it so I got the number from her and started. The online training was great and if you had any questions you could post them and they would be answered online, which was very helpful. The staff at MED Workshops was also very supportive. About a year ago I moved to Washington from Idaho. I was weighing my options as to what I could do for a career when I met a former MED Workshops student, now an educator for MED Workshops, who told me about this great career opportunity. I signed up for the class and within less than six months was earning an income. This compared to one to two years of going through a college course and then after graduating finding my own job. I now run to preschool, run to soccer practice, run to the store and WORK. Before I went to work and found other people to run my kids around and do my errands. The most important thing to remember about MED Workshops is that they are always there to help and support you. MED Workshops has given me the opportunity to work from home so that I can be home when my kids get home from school and when they have all of those days off for whatever reason. This was always a struggle for me to find a job that I could work around my husbands schedule so as not to have to put the kids in daycare. Finding a good reliable daycare isn't easy, especially when you have two kids with disabilities. Most daycare facilities wouldn't even take my kids. This works out great for me. Not to mention the great commute. Actually, there really isn't a commute, other than me driving five miles to pick up my tapes at the ?drop site. I put the kids on the bus in the morning, go pick up my tapes, get back home, and have my work done by the time the kids and my husband get home in the afternoon. It works out great for everyone. I would wholeheartedly recommend MED Workshops to anyone who is considering a career in medical transcription. The training beforehand and practical on-the-job experience during my internship, has been successful. Shortly after my son's birth I was laid off from my job. It was right in the midst of a horrible economy and finding employment in my field was going to be tough. It was also going to be very hard to leave my son at home and have him raised by someone else while I was at work. I knew that my aunt was a medical transcriptionist, who worked out of her home, and that started to interest me. I began looking into the different schools and what they had to offer. At the time I started the workshop I was nineteen years old, three months pregnant and working full time as a waitress. Studying and doing my typing for the class was somewhat difficult for me, but I believe it can be achieved by any dedicated person. Working at home is very convenient for me because I do not have to put my newborn into daycare. Graduates from 2002:When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter I knew that I wasn't about to put her in daycare. I knew I wanted to be at home with her, but also be able to earn an income as well. I thought it was hopeless until a friend of mine told me she was checking into MED Workshops. I really wanted to stay at home and work, somehow. I could have found a clerical position outside the home, but that would mean day care, driving time and stress, etc. I especially didn't want to deal with sick kids and having to go to work. If I worked at home I could stay with my kids and still make money, but it sounded too good to be true. I finally responded to the ad in the newspaper and after talking to Rachel a few times I was convinced it would all work out in time. Rachel was straightforward about the particular course I chose and about what it takes to be a medical transcriptionist at home. MED Workshops offers different types of courses. I took the FULL on-line course and because I wanted to have the freedom to study whenever I could. It took me a full year to complete the course and there were many times I wanted to cry or quit, or throw my computer out the window, but I stuck with it! Worthwhile education is never easy. Deciding to enter the workforce again after 13 years of being a stay-at-home mom was a little unnerving to me. I still find it hard to believe that a year ago I was fumbling with trying to pronounce medical terms, and now here I am, owner of my own business; because of the excellent training and guidance that I received from Rachel, if I do come across a word I do not know, I remember the prefix/suffix lessons and can look it up quickly. I just completed the course and I am currently employed as a medical transcriptionist. Over the past four months, Jean has been an outstanding instructor, employer, resource and friend. She has made my participation in the program extremely pleasant. Ever since I began this program she has continually impressed me with her availability, her personality and her knowledge. First of all, Jean has made it very easy for me to get a hold of her thru the Forum. However, her availability would not mean much if she did not have an answer, which is not the case. She is extremely smart and has a wealth of knowledge in the medical field that never ceases to amaze me. No matter the term or question, she always has an answer for me. Last but not least is Jean's personality. I can honestly say no matter how bad I ever felt for calling she immediately put my worries to rest. Not only does she answer any question I had for her, she quickly followed up her answer with positive words of encouragement. Therefore, I have no reservations in recognizing her as one of the finest instructors I have known. What can I say about this woman to do her justice? She is simply... awesome! I found out about medical transcription from a neighbor of mine who has several friends who have gone through MED Workshops. I decided after I had my second child and having 3 children at home, including my step-daughter, I could not bear leaving them with daycare again. My neighbor recommended MED Workshopss work shop to me and as I looked into it I found it was less expensive and took considerably less time than going through a community college. I am now able to stay home with my three kids and I still have an income I can be proud of. Working part time I am making the same money I did working full time and paying daycare. I completed the MED Workshops workshop in August 2001. I found the internship and the training I received through MED Workshops to be just what I needed to obtain employment as a medical transcriptionist and work at home in a relatively short period of time. I attended the winter 2001 transcription classes offered by MED Workshops. They were very informative and invaluable to the new career I had embarked upon. The class schedule offered ample class and study time with assistance available whenever needed. It has been wonderful to work with MED Workshops. They have gone out of their way to make sure I have the information and knowledge necessary to become a good transcriptionist. Graduates from 2000:Twice over the years I looked into medical transcription education and both times I felt I would not have much success in the endeavor due to the high cost of the materials and having to learn it at home entirely on my own. Going to Community College for a degree was not much different in terms of cost, learning on my own and time involved. MED Workshops offered the benefits I was looking for. It was short-term class that was cost efficient. I could work at my own pace and it provided hands-on materials and practical mentoring with experience and wit. In the beginning I honestly did not think I could do this without any typing skills. Now, not only am I a fast typist, but a more accurate one. I recently went through the MED Workshops medical transcription course and have been pleasantly surprised by the resulting education and work knowledge that I have received by taking their course. The course is well rounded, well informed and well directed. The practice transcription, workbooks, anatomy books, etc., helped develop and master my current work Internship I can feel confident in my ability to perform under more challenging circumstances, with wider knowledge and understanding, than I would have been able to do if I had taken a different course. I cannot imagine trying to go through another course for the same information that I have been given in the MED Workshops course. Karen is a magnificent mentor. She gives of herself and more. She has the experience, knowledge and ability to give that knowledge in such a precise way that will make all the difference in the world. This program has all the proper techniques, tools, programs and most importantly, the working information that mean all the difference in the world of a medical transcriptionist and to the medical professionals that need the information to be 100% correct, but most importantly, the patient?s lives that are in the balance. For me, these classes were a dream come true. I had been looking into the field of medical transcription for at least a year before I came across these classes and MED Workshops. There is so much information that is necessary to know to become a medical transcriptionist. Workbooks and software were a great asset to establish a baseline of knowledge of which I work from. Jean, shares her experience and knowledge and is very helpful. She answered any questions once the classes were over. Deciding to be a medical transcriptionist from home is the best decision that I have made and April is a wonderful coach teaching me all the skills necessary to accomplish this goal. The course has a wealth of information and Karen is very knowledgeable and more than willing to share what she knows with her students. By the end of the class I felt as if I had an extremely solid understanding of medical terminology and the ability to fully use my resources when necessary for what I did not know. I am so happy that I took this class and love what I am doing for a living now. I am writing this letter in recommendation of Jean and MED Workshops. In June of 1999, I began a transcription course taught by Jean. Since that time, Jean, has helped me learn the necessary skills to work at home doing medical transcription. I found the course to be very educational and challenging. Jean was an excellent course coach. She gave us a very accurate description of the field of medical transcription. When the course was completed I began working as a medical transcriptionist. I have found the job to be very interesting. Even though I'm working at home alone, I take a lot of comfort in the fact that Jean is just an email away. Jean has never ceased to amaze me. Whenever I am completely stumped by a word, I give Jean an email and she knows it off the top of her head. What I appreciate the most is that she won't just tell me what the word is. She'll go the extra step and explain to me what the word means and also explains to me the procedures, etc. That way I feel as if I'm getting a full understanding about what it is I'm typing about. I don't feel as if I'm just typing a lot of medical words I can't even pronounce, let alone spell! I found Ms. Roberts not only to be a knowledgeable and articulate instructor, but a warm and caring instructor as well. Taking the course through Karen offered me many things that correspondence courses could not.
